SimpleBlog.NET

I have tried a few different blog engines with varying degrees of frustration. In the end I decided to write a simple programme to act as my blog. I have decided to give this out to all for free.

It’s developed in Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition using VB.aspx pages.

Because it is ASPX it will only work on servers with .NET  installed.

There are 3 pages involved

Blog.aspx
This is the main view page. It lists links to the blogs with an abstract of the first 5 lines of the blog.

BlogRead.aspx
This will show the text of the blog and has a comment box.

Add.aspx
Here is where the blogs are created or edited. I have installed the Ajax editor control to edit the blogs and it is stored in the BIN folder.

The blogs are saved as HTM files in the App_Data folder. Make sure that the App_Data folder has read write permission set on it.

The title of the blog is the HTM filename so make sure that each blog title is unique.

Instructions:
Open Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition and click File, New Web site. Enter C:\SimpleBlog as the folder name.
Press F5 to save and run the blank website. (Just hit ok if Debugging not enabled comes up)
Close Web Developer
Extract the files in SimpleBlog.zip to the C:\SimpleBlog folder you just created. Overwrite if asked.
Open Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition again and click File, Open Web site. Select the SimpleBlog folder and click open.
Right click the file Blog.aspx and choose Set as start page.
Press F5 to run and you should see the blog.aspx page.
You can have a look in each of the aspx pages and modify as you like. Change the titles, headers, colours, styles, etc… Have fun!
